Sound Doctrine vs. Bad Doctrine
Timothy was asked by Paul to stay in Ephesus and minister because of all the poor doctrine that was being taught. There had been a prevalent problem in the early Church of bad doctrine that consisted mainly of those that taught circumcision as a necessary part of salvation and as those in this passage that was including fables and genealogies as part of a doctrine of salvation. There have always been false teachers that have infiltrated the Church and warnings given included by Jesus, Matt.7:13-23. Paul understood his own ignorant unbelief and his own wicked life (chief of all sinners) and how the Lord changed him to godliness and sound doctrine.
