Those Who Hear
As our Lord again preaches the Beatitudes to this mixed multitude he stirs them with this message of love. We are all reminded that often even the worst of sinners will love someone that loves them, be it a mother, wife or child. But, in this passage, Jesus preaches to the hearer, the one who is blessed and bound for glory. He told them and us that the blessed are not to be like the world, but to be like Him. Jesus told them to love their enemies which for almost all of them meant those that were Gentiles and Romans. This seems contrary today to what we also are taught, to be revengeful and angry. We are to be Christ-like and treat our enemies so well that we will even gladly pray, be merciful and give them the Gospel.
