  1. When God instituted on the seventh day of creation a Sabbath it wasn’t because He needed rest (Isaiah 40:28), but it was intended for people to set a day aside to rest and to worship Him.  Somehow in the midst of our modern time of strange work days and hours, the idea of taking a day to rest and to worship seems far off to most people including Christians.
  2. People that say they do not need rest forget that the Bible reminds us in Psalm 127:2 that “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows. For so He gives His beloved sleep.”  It is a provision of God to give us rest from the daily grind and the challenges that we face on a daily basis.
  3. Rest does not undermine the value of work. It is God’s intention that we are to work and then to rest.  In the Garden, God immediately put Adam to work and it was meant to be fulfilling and useful to Adam and his descendants.  Certainly sin has made work much more difficult (“the sweat of our brows”).  Paul in 2Thess.3:10-12 reminded the saints at Thessalonica that they needed to work and not be busybodies.
  4. The Lord Jesus Christ promises those that come to Him in salvation that He will give them rest, Matt.11:28-30. This is of course salvation that is in Christ alone and is the blessing of the heavenly rest of eternal life.
